While visiting Pensacola, FL, we explored Ft Pickens. An early rain threatened the day, but then the sun broke through and added one final arch to those of the fort. Completed in 1834, it served the Union during the Civil War (it was one of only four Southern forts not captured by the Confederacy). By the end of the Second World War, such forts were obsolete because of long-range bombers and missiles. Ft Pickens became part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore when it opened in 1971. It, along with the Naval Air Museum, are interesting sites when visiting Pensacola.
