In May 1961, Alan Shepard rode Freedom 7 to an altitude of 116 miles, traveling 302 miles downrange in 15 minutes as the first American in space.  It was that sub-orbital flight that launched American human space-flight.  Shepard later returned to space as the commander of Apollo 14 and the oldest man to walk on the moon at age 47.
