From Point Park in Chattanooga, cannons overlook the city.  The battle that occurred was called The Battle Above The Clouds.  Soldiers scaled the cliffs using ladders facing fierce fire from above.  The Union ultimately captured Lookout Mountain above Chattanooga.

Spending time along the Gulf coast near Pensacola (by the national seashore) allows the night sky to sparkle unlike anything inland where the light pollution hides the beautiful night sky.  At times I have caught something streaking across the low sky.  The only sound is the crashing waves and very few people have been in the area (although I did find a couple out night fishing once when I processed the shots).  Considered going out to a deserted beach sometime and wait for the light to recede.  The night sky is truly amazing and awesome when you take the time to simply meditate in such beauty.

This is my beautiful elk hind.  She is found in the Rocky Mountain National Park, outside Estes, Colorado.  I think she is so beautiful proudly standing in her natural habitat, where humans do not tread.

This is a black and white version of a forest floor setting in the forests of North Carolina.  This photo exhibits the small flowers and plants that are often seen in the depths of a forest.  This rendition of this photo is my reflection on a photo I have seen in a compilation of Ansel Adams' work.

This cabin is an extra building close to the Mingus Mill, near Cherokee, North Carolina.  I love the feeling of privacy and secrecy that the cabin exudes surrounded by the beauty of the trees shading it.

I am inspired to do my Zoo Safari and shoot threatened and endangered species.  I can't resist shooting all animal, even if they are not threatened.  The Southern White Rhino is one such animal.  However, as I researched the White Rhino I learned that its status, while not threatened, is considered near threatened.  The Southern White Rhino is the least threatened of all the rhinoceroses.  They are mostly threatened by habitat loss, continuous poaching in recent years and the high illegal demand for rhino horn for commercial purposes.  White rhinos will breed in captivity, and zoos cooperate to maintain genetic diversity of the captive-bred animals.

I call this photo "Reflections in Glass".  This photo was taken in a greenhouse in Asheville, North Carolina.  This grouping of container plants were placed strategically in a greenhouse so that the plants would reflect in the window glass behind them.  I love the beautiful composition.  The photo also illustrates how we reflect on the objects outside of ourselves and how those objects reflect on our soul.

I call these gardens "Fire Tulips".  This is a beautiful array of warm colored tulips to brighten up your day.  The fire colors also represent the passions of the soul.  I enjoy gardening myself and filling the yard with beauty.

Mabee Mills

In the early nineteenth century, mills began to appear along Eighteenmile Creek in Royalton, New York.  Eventually, two mill ponds were constructed to drive the mills that were built in the area.  The first mill was built in 1812 by Colonel Jonathan Mabee, and his family operated that, and other mills along the creek.  In 1872, the family built a new four story gristmill to replace the original mill which they sold.  In 1880, fire gutted the stone Mabee Mills and it was abandoned.  The remains of the structure still stand, although, due to increasing decay and rock-falls, the mill is now posted.

This is my Springhouse in the Woods.  It is located in Cade's Cove in the Smoky Mountains.  This photograph illustrates an entrance into the private recesses of the soul and its integration with nature.  It provides a place of serenity and quietude along with its sense of history.  The setting reminds me of Henry David Thoreau's Walden.

Hi, this is Brenda!  I wanted to comment a little on the pictures in my gallery.  This is Mingus Mill outside Cherokee, NC.  I call it my "Old Mill".  I love old things and have a passion for our history.  The Mingus Mill captures a bit of that history.  It is an old grist mill that still functions.  Corn is still into cornmeal there.

Hi, this is Brenda!  Let me introduce "Purple Passion".  This is a beautiful amaryllis found in a park near Cozumel, Mexico.  It expresses my passion for life, knowing that we are not promised tomorrow.

Hi, this is Brenda!  This is my "Weathered Boat".  I found this boat on an island near Grand Turks.  I was visiting a conch farm there and was wandering the area when I saw this wonderful old boat.

African Lion, 2017

I have been working to photograph endangered and threatened animals while on zoo safaris.  Usually the lions are bedded down during the day when I go to the zoos.  This visit caught this guy walking about.  He is such a noble beast.  I hate that they are threatened in the wild.  As you visit the zoos, please pay attention to which animals are threatened, endangered, or critically endangered.

Our spotlight is only a month from now.  Brenda and I will be featured Friday, December 1, 2017 at LMO and Co. gallery in downtown Talladega, AL.  Originally, the spotlight was on me, but the gallery owner decided to invite Brenda to join me.  Since we have bee together for 42 years, that was a perfect blending of our photographs.  If you are in the area, consider joining us.  You can view the photos we are planning to share at http://www.goldennautilus.com/p425504959

http://www.goldennautilus.com/blog/2017/8/preparing-for-the-gallery-show Preparing for the gallery show

I know I haven't posted any photos for a few weeks.  Things have been busy between my day job and getting ready for my first gallery show.  It seems the easiest part of all of this was the camera work.  I am almost to the end of the matting and framing.  For me, the hardest part is determining the price for the framed art.  I have a few resources (one works at the art museum) to make sure I don't price much above or below their worth.  I certainly want to cover my costs, and make a profit, but not drive customers away.  Here I am at another first.  No matter what happens, I will learn and grow from this experience.

Built in 1878, this Methodist Church at Somerset Corner in New York was the second building of the first church organized in Somerset, NY.  The congregation moved to its current location in the late 1960s when the Somerset Methodist Church and the Barker M.E. Methodist Church joined together, and this structure fell into disuse.  In 2013, this building was decorated for various church celebrations.

http://www.goldennautilus.com/blog/2017/6/sea-oats Sea Oats

On the beach, one of the most beautiful sight is stands of sea oats.  Unfortunately, some people will walk on them or just pull them out.  Sea oats provide protection for the beach by holding the sand in place.  I often see people in natural settings destroying the environment--admittedly often through ignorance of how to protect nature.  There is a saying all should embrace: "Take only pictures; leave only footprints."

Early in the morning, all the watercraft on the lake were quiet and still.  A calm wind gently rippled the cold water, yet still allowed reflections.  The mountains, still topped with snow, ringed the lake.  This was our first visit to Lake Tahoe, but will not be our last.
